Springfield BOE approves contract with teacher’s union

A three-year contract with the Springfield Education Association has been approved.

At the May 10 meeting, the board of education agreed to wage increases of 3 percent per year, and added language to better represent the Springfield Digital Academy as a traditional school building.

“There were no changes to benefits or major changes to working conditions,” said Treasurer Ryan Lockwood.

The SEA represents 255 teachers in the district.

Personnel

The school board took action on a number of personnel matters, including the hiring of three school resource officers for the 2023-24 school year. They are Ralph Green, James Schill and Frederick Schnoor Jr. Salaries for the temporary SROs was set at $28.33 per hour in 2023-24.

They issued a casual labor contract to Staci Hey; personal service contracts to Teresa Bowers, choir accompanist, Amy Gelsone, choir concert and graduation choir director, and pupil activity permit to Robert Edwards, middle school track and field coach.

The school board accepted resignations from Sara Andrews, Crissey and Holloway art, and Arin Kreil, Drew Longmore and Jennifer Vasquez, substitute teachers, all effective June 30.

Also submitting resignations were Jerry Bell, career tech coordinator, July 31; Craig Walton, Holloway third grade, August 13, and Brenda Knitz, Holloway recess monitor, May 6.

Hired as substitute teachers for 2023-24 were Madenline Jaco and Amanda Parent. In addition, 10 classified substitute contracts were approved for Dawn Balonek, food service, lunchroom/recess monitor; Curtis Cunningham, custodian and delivery person; Lanova Cunningham, bus aide, custodian; Heather Hawk, bus aide, bus driver, field trip driver; Troy Laurie, bus aide, custodian; Jennifer Leasure, bus aide, delivery, van driver; Kyle Linehan, bus driver, field trip driver; Sierra Martin, food service, lunchroom/ recess monitor; Sandy McCaleb, bus aide, food service, lunchroom/recess monitor, and Jeffrey VanDromme, bus aide, bus, van and field trip driver, delivery and lunchroom/recess monitor.

Other Business

In other business, the school board:

•Renewed the food service management contract for 2023-24 to Compass Group USA Inc., Chartwells Division. The cost increased $260 per month for a total monthly charge of $4,013.

•Approved the list of 270 graduating seniors in the class of 2023.

•Accepted the donation of two used wheelchairs, valued at $50 from Promedica.

•Reviewed and approved revisions to the early childhood and Springfield Digital Academy handbooks.

•Approved two requests to attend professional development days.

The next board of education meeting will be at 4:15 p.m., Tuesday, May 23, in the meeting room at the administration building, 6900 Hall Street, Holland, and is open to the public.
