Following an executive session at the August 23 meeting, the Springfield Board of Education approved a contract with the Springfield Education Association.
The contract, which took effect July 1, calls for a 2.75 percent increase on the base wage.
“There were no changes to benefits,” said Treasurer Ryan Lockwood, adding that the school board and union agreed to “roll over the language for another year and just negotiate salary.”
The previous contract for three years was approved in 2019 and granted 2.5 percent wage increases in 2019-20 and 2020-21 with a wage reopener in 2021-22.
In addition to the teachers’ contract, the board approved salary range adjustments of low, midpoint and high for 14 administrative positions.

Personnel
The school board took action on several personnel matters for 2022-23. They awarded one-year certified contracts to Stacy Freund, Dorr kindergarten; Laura Siegel, federal programs– speech language pathologist, and Sarah Vaughn, long-term substitute.
One-year classified contracts were approved for Aundre Graham, 4 hour bus driver, and Brenda Knitz, 2 hour Holloway recess monitor.
Jamie Manack was granted a change of assignment from 2 hour Dorr recess monitor to 2 hour Holloway lunchroom monitor.
Work shifts were adjusted for several classified employees. They are Phat (Lee) Chau and Aundre Graham, from 2 hour to 2.5 hour Holland recess monitor; Sharon Turner, from 3 hour SMS food service to 3.5 hour SHS food service; Karen Willis, from 3 hour to 4 hour SHS food service, and Victoria Yeager, from 2 hour to 2.5 hour Holland recess monitor.
Awarded casual labor contracts were Eric Bachar, James Eberly, Emily Golic, Tyler Haughawout, Maureen Kohlman, Bill Renwand, Dirk Ruckman, Leah Schwan, Ken Steinmiller, Annie Whitmire and David Whitmire.
Appointed as the stadium cleanup crew are Connie Elgin, Aundre Graham, Jennifer Leasure, Joshua Mattis, Barbara Mohr, Wade Opacewski, Danielle Welch and Sue Wyland.
The board also granted leaves of absence to Sheridan Parker, Holloway principal secretary, November to February and Sean Enck, SHS instructor, three days in September.
Pupil activity permits were issued for Allana Bell, SHS girls soccer assistant coach; Anthony Frontine, SMS football assistant cocoach; Gabriel Garza, SHS football volunteer coach; Andrew Gilliam, SMS football head co-coach seventh grade; Kobee Houghtlen, SMS football head co-coach eighth grade; Anthony Scott, SMS football head co-coach seventh grade, a change from full contract, and Jayson Taylor, SHS girls soccer volunteer coach.
The school board accepted the resignation of Adam Bick, interventionist and substitute teacher, effective August 10, and employed Jacob Mihalek as a student worker to be paid minimum wage.
Substitute teaching contracts were awarded to Amy Goulding, Trisha Hardner, Heather Mossing, John Scott and Carrie Wcislek.
Long-term substitute teaching contracts were approved for Alec Blake, SMS; Jamee Carr, Crissey second grade, and Daniel Dudley, SHS.
Also hired as a substitute secretary was Danielle Walker.
In addition, the school board approved substitute teacher translator contracts to Mariam Al-Abed, Olga Block, Hibah Elnoory, Lily Li and Leila Smidi.
Other Business
In other business, the board of education:
•Discussed challenges with transportation with the closure of Angola and King roads for construction of a roundabout. “It will affect routing and timing,” Superintendent Matt Geha said, adding they are prepared for the closure.
•Commended Mr. Lockwood and his department for achieving a perfect audit award for the eighth time from the Ohio Auditor of State’s office.
The clean audit report means that the district’s financial audit did not contain findings for recovery, material citations, material weaknesses, significant deficiencies, single audit findings or any questioned costs.
“You are in a select group,” said Lori Brodie of the state auditor’s office, noting that the award “represents all the hard work of the employees in your district.”
•Approved the SHS athletic department’s membership with Agile Sport Technologies for $11,850 and a technology department licensing agreement through Sergeant Laboratories for $6,903.
•Approved the early childhood center parent and guardian handbook. The booklet includes information on cleaning, tuition, student entry and withdrawal, procedures, programming and new staff.
•Accepted donations of school supplies from 1st Baptist, Calvary Church, Compelled Church, Dwelling Place, Rotary Club of Maumee–clothing, Springfield Area Prevention Coalition, Supply Source, Target and Texas Road House.
•Authorized three requests to attend professional development seminars for Kristie Chandler, EMIS changes for fiscal year 2023; Marty Perlaky, teaching biology, and Grant Toepfer-Gaver, All Ohio Counselors Conference.
The next school board meeting will be at 4:15 p.m., Wednesday, September 14, at the administration building, 6900 Hall Street, and is open to the public.
