The week-long event is a statewide celebration of the jobs, industries and skills that are in-demand in Ohio. Businesses across the county will have the opportunity to open their doors and showcase the many top jobs, industries and skills that are available in the area.

Commissioners oppose school voucher legislation

When it comes to the school voucher system, the Lucas County commissioners stand with Toledo Public Schools in expressing their opposition to the program. At the April 11 meeting, the county commissioners approved a resolution stating their belief that the legislation currently before the Ohio 135th General Assembly “would defund public education, diminish local autonomy from boards of education, harmfully target members of our community and/or interfere with Lucas County students’ rights to receive a quality education.” The commissioners said they “fervently oppose” House Bills 11 and 13 and Senate Bill 11.

Library program shares the secret meaning of flowers

On April 19, participants of Holland Branch Library’s Victorian flower class learned about and made tussie-mussies, a small bouquet. Lin Germain, manager of Swesey Florist, Maumee, told the students the meanings of each of the flowers and greenery. In the 1800s, the hidden language of flowers could carry a message to those receiving them. For instance, carnations mean pride and beauty; ferns mean sincerity and roses represent love. Each student made a bouquet and wrapped the stems with ribbon to take home and enjoy.

Biggest Week in American Birding is about to begin

The Biggest Week in American Birding is here, and the Journal offers a preview each week of the types of birds residents and visitors will encounter at area parks. Nature’s Nursery collaborates to create a Greener Garden on Earth Day

What does it take to feed 900 baby bunnies in a single year? It takes teamwork, coordination and a lot of greens. Nature’s Nursery Center for Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation has become a pro over the last 34 years in caring for orphaned bunnies, squirrels, woodchucks and other native wildlife, and now with the help of several other organizations, will be digging into gardening to create a more economical and environmentally “green” option to feeding the animals.

TMWC ‘Recovery Together’ health and resource fair
