It’s been a busy few weeks for the Lucas County sheriff’s office and Springfield Township Fire Department.
Lieutenant John Leach of the sheriff’s department and Assistant Fire Chief Dave Moore updated the trustees on recent activities at the March 15 meeting.
“We want to thank you for your continued support and that of your personnel,” the lieutenant said, noting their help was invaluable during a March 10 brush fire that burned 25 acres. [see related story on page 4]
The lieutenant also expressed appreciation to the department concerning an accident that occurred earlier that morning seriously injuring the driver of the car and leaving a Springfield Schools bus driver shaken.
“That was great cooperation from everyone,” the lieutenant said of both incidents.
Assistant Chief Moore agreed, “We both had a busy month and a busy start to the year. But we can always count on them for whatever we need.”
He added, “We’re very thankful for all the work your guys do.”
Sheriff’s Report
In his report to the trustees, Lt. Leach said the department is looking into acquiring a second speed trailer for the county, noting the current trailer is out of service, while the department researches the cost for replacement batteries. “The battery cells dried up,” he explained.
The trustees offered to help with the cost of the batteries, pointing out they have used the speed trailer in the township a number of times.
Lt. Leach also asked the trustees if they would consider parting with an offline life squad. The sheriff is interested in obtaining it for the county’s tactical team, he said.
“We were going to use it as a mobile maintenance vehicle,” said township administrator Mike Hampton, but it has not been converted and is sitting in the lot.
“I’m open to the idea, especially if we are not using it,” Trustee Bob Bethel said, adding it could be offered to the sheriff for $1 since his department will need to put work into the vehicle.
Trustee Andy Glenn agreed, “If we have no use for it, I’m good with that.”
Fire Report
Assistant Chief Moore presented the February fire report. “It was a very busy month for February,” he said.
According to the report, there were 350 calls for service, 75 percent of which–or 255–were EMS calls. They were followed by public service assistance, 90; canceled en route, 12; wrong location, nine; structure fire, eight of which six were in Sylvania Township; unintentional system/no fire, seven; vehicle fire, six; rescue emergency, medical assist and spills and leaks, three apiece; water problem, steam and alarm malfunction, two each, and vegetation fire, rubbish fire, EMS standby, chemical release, service call, animal rescue and false alarm, one each
The department conducted seven inspections, including six annual; five state and one each final remodel.
