Springfield BOE reviews 2020-21 food service report

At the August 24 meeting, the Springfield Board of Education reviewed a report on food service in 2020-21.

Jamie Filipiak, food services director, said breakfast meals served last year totaled 51,073, representing an increase of 1,709 from the previous year.

The number of lunches decreased from 193,105 in 2019-20 to 142,128 this past school year.

She attributes the numbers to COVID-19 which forced the closure of school districts in March 2020 and periodic shutdowns of in-person learning in 2020-21.

Receipts also were lower this past year at $19,632, compared to the previous year’s total of $563,340.

However, the district is being reimbursed $617,255 in federal and state subsidies.

Ms. Filipiak noted that during the pandemic “all students were getting free breakfasts and lunches,” a program which is continuing this school year.

The pandemic also forced a change in how meals were served last year. “Students were given prepackaged bagged meals for both breakfast and lunch,” she said, adding, “We also delivered meals for Renewed Minds and ran a drive-thru for Springfield Digital Academy online students.”

Food services began the year with a carryover balance of $9,714 and ended the year May 31 with a balance of $664.99.
