Springfield Township residents may soon see new speed trailers popping up on township roads.
At the March 20 meeting, the trustees approved the purchase of two speed trailers for $36,273.
Purchased from Stalker Applied Concepts of Richardson, Texas, one unit will have a four by eight foot screen and the other will be three by six.
Lieutenant John Leach, of the Lucas County sheriff’s office, said the new trailers can be used for multiple things such as for the annual fireworks display or to reroute traffic in the event of an accident or fire. The units also come with an optional top mount solar panel for increased autonomy.
“I think it’s a great tool to help us and the community,” he added.
Lt. Leach noted the smaller one is ideal for neighborhoods, and the larger one can be used for heavily traveled roadways.
Trustee Andy Glenn suggested they purchase one of each size.
Administrator Mike Hampton said there is money in the budget for both.
“I think that makes sense,” said Trustee Bob Bethel about buying one of each.
Trustee Tom Anderson asked about the warranty and operating software.
Mr. Hampton responded that it would be 10 years before an upgrade would be needed.
The administrator also pointed out that the township can purchase the demo model of the larger speed trailer at a lower cost, $18,560, compared to new at $21,105.
Each model comes equipped with a rotating mast mount design for easier travel, setup and positioning and four leveling jacks for stability.
