January 9 is recognized as National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. We all know being in law enforcement can be a very dangerous, tough, demanding and rewarding job. We would like to recognize one of our own in Springfield Local Schools, Officer Brett Warner. He has been the director of safety services in Springfield Local Schools for three years. He began his law enforcement career in 1993 with the Waterville Township Police Department, where he enjoyed the opportunities offered by a small agency where employees share all responsibilities associated with law enforcement duties.
In 2003, Officer Warner accepted the opportunity to become the Drug Prevention Officer for the Lucas County Sheriff’s office. He expanded the program to more than 20 schools in the county, reaching thousands of children each year with the drug prevention curriculum. In addition to drug awareness, his focus has been youth safety by presenting programs such as stranger danger, internet safety and awareness, and being a safety town instructor.
In 2012, Officer Warner was promoted to a command officer position and accepted the additional responsibilities as the director of community affairs, where he provided press releases and safety information through local media outlets. He also was responsible for the coordination and requirements of off duty employments, where he wrote and implemented policy.
In 2013, he was active in expanding community training in response to active shooter situations. He supervised area school resource officers, child support investigators and the former Marine Patrol Unit. Officer Warner initiated and currently supervises the Youth Explorer Post and provides training opportunities to its members. He also represents the sheriff on many area boards and coalitions.
Officer Warner attended the community college of the U.S. Air Force and is a 23year military veteran with combined service in active duty Air Force, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserves.
His last four years of service included being assigned to the Air Force Central Command, where he served as the reserve superintendent of force protection. He retired in 2008 as an Air Force Security Forces Master Sergeant.
In addition to his law enforcement and military careers, Officer Warner also has nine years of experience as an elected official as a Waterville Township trustee, where he had opportunities to be involved with government on many different levels. Officer Warner enjoys and seeks any opportunity to help make and keep our community safe.
