At the March 13 meeting, the Springfield Board of Education took action on a number of personnel matters.
The board issued changes of assignment for 2024-25 to Kelly Kahmann and Hallie Wright-Comes, teachers on special assignment (dyslexia specialists), kindergarten through grade eight.
They appointed Charssie Willis as an interventionist at Dorr Elementary effective March 4.
Awarded one-year classified contracts were Catherine Hoffman, 4-hour SHS food service effective March 4, and Lakeeta Young, 3.5-hour SHS food service, March 5.
Changes in assignment were granted to Tammy Fehser from Crissey 3-hour food service to transportation 2-hour bus driver–mid day; Jennifer Ruiz from SMS school counselor secretary to secretary to assistant SHS principal-student services; Danielle Welch from secretary to assistant SHS student services to secretary to the SHS principal, effective March 4; Avery Fleischmann from temporary secretary to the SMS counseling department to secretary to the SMS counseling department.
The board also approved leaves of absence for Ricardo Aguilar, January 29 to March 22, and Lauren Rudnicki, February 14 to May 2.
Awarded personal service contracts were Jordyn Beery, SHS Drama assistant director, and Amy Gelsone, accompanist.
Pupil activity permit contracts for 2023-24 were granted to Nathan Dixon, SHS JV baseball assistant coach, and Kierra Field and Savannah Kirk, SHS JV softball assistant co-coaches.
For the 2024-25 school year, pupil activities were awarded to Erik Bates, SHS girls soccer volunteer coach; John Garrow, SHS JV girls soccer assistant coach, and Anthony Scott, SMS eighth grade football head coach.
The school board accepted a retirement from Cynthia Williams, Holloway food service, effective June 1, and commended her for her service.
In addition, they accepted a dozen resignations from Raul “Sam” Arredondo, SHS football assistant coach for 2024-25; Katie Crago, SHS Speech and Debate Team advisor, June 1; Bradley Davis, SMS football head coach, 202425; Brandon Edwards, SHS football assistant coach, 2024-25; Amy Fleming, SHS social studies teacher, March 1; Jamie Hesselbein, SMS football assistant coach eighth grade, 202425; Joshua Pawlowski, SMS football assistant coach grades seven and eight, 2024-25; Jason Waters, SHS football assistant coach, 2024-25; Nicole Montgomery, 8-hour SHS night custodian, February 26; Odessa Lynch, 4-hour SHS food service, and Catherine Hoffman, 2.5 SHS food service, March 8.
They also terminated Roger Perry, substitute teacher, as of March 12.
Several stipends were approved for summer tutoring to Deborah Hughes-Pettaway, Kelly Kahmann-substitute teacher as needed, Natalie Kalo, Jamie Lenox, Jennifer Mercer, Karen Rhegness, Amanda Schlageter and Robin Sears.
Employed as substitute teachers are Gregory Bracho, Benjamin Berschback, Melanie Kempton, Grahm Reinhard, Lindasy Scott and Charssie Willis.
Hired as substitute bus aides were Cristine Ramey, Robert Edwards and Lakeeta Young.
Other Business
In other business, the school board:
•Approved College Credit Plus agreements with Owens Community College and Lourdes University. The costs are Owens–$140 on campus or $80 online or on the SHS campus; Lourdes–$ 166.55 on the university campus only.
•Adopted a resolution regarding the employment of substitute teachers for 202425.
Signed by Governor Mike DeWine in 2022, the bill is designed to address the shortage of substitute teachers through changes in licensure requirements.
•Entered into a services agreement with Beyond Healthcare at a cost of $4,312.
•Approved job descriptions for middle school–athletic director, coach, Math Counts, Title I support staff grades 6-8, Winter Guard director and yearbook advisor; high school–foreign language club advisor, Homecoming advisor, marching band assistant director, National Honor Society advisor, and yearbook advisor; dyslexia teacher specialist on assignment.
•Heard a presentation from Oatis Amick, Crissey elementary principal, who updated the board on activities taking place this school year.
•Approved the 2024-25 preschool calendar. The first day of school for all students is August 22 and school ends May 28, 2025. Sessions run from 8:40 to 11:25 a.m. and 12:45 to 3:30 p.m.
•Discussed but took no action on a contract with the Holland Police department for a school resource officer. Legal is still reviewing the contract, explained Treasurer Ryan Lockwood.
•Entered into executive session to discuss specialized details of security but took no action afterward.
•Approved nine requests to attend professional development meetings.
The next school board meeting will be at 4:15 p.m., Wednesday, April 10 in the board room at the administration building, 6924 Spring Valley Drive, Holland, and is open to the public.
