Two Springfield Township Fire Department members have tendered their resignations.
At the September 17 meeting, the trustees accepted, at the request of Fire Chief Jonathon Ziehr, the resignations of Chad Branum and Ryan Bastien.
Branum accepted a full-time position out of state and Bastien is currently employed full time for another department and can no longer commit to serving the township fire department, the chief explained.
Branum’s last day of employment will be October 20, and Bastien’s final day was September 17.
August Statistics Chief Ziehr presented the fire report from August.
Last month, the department responded to 439 calls–13 fire, 283 EMS and 143 other. Station 51 on McCord Road fielded the majority, 247; followed by Garden Road, 107; Frankfort Road, 52, and Crissey, 33.
The majority of calls were for Springfield Township, 327, followed by Holland, 49; Spencer Township, 11; Swanton Township, 10, and Harding Township, five.
They provided mutual aid to Monclova Township nine times, and Toledo, eight. Also receiving mutual aid were Sylvania and Sylvania Township, four; Swanton, three; Richfield Township, two, and Maumee and Whitehouse, one.
Ziehr noted that six site plan reviews were conducted for remodels –Garden Harvest, 8060 Airport Highway; and Quail Lakes Apartments, 7170 Quail Hollow; new construction– Springfield Township Public service, 1355 Albon Road, and Positive Trades Group, 8702 Airport Highway; new business– Coco’s, 7350 Airport Highway, and fire alarm–Orchard Centre, 7103 Orchard Centre Drive.
According to fire inspector Dave Moore, there were 14 fire inspections conducted and six safety inspections for Extended Stay, Sheetz, private residence, Strawberry Homecoming, Spirit Halloween and Kolachi Bazaar.
The department investigated two fires. A structural fire in the garage of a home at 435 North Dorcas Road caused $19,600 in damages and was determined to be the result of fireworks set off nearby that landed on the structure. The second fire involved a vehicle at 7155 Airport Highway. That fire was caused by an engine malfunction and damage was set at $19,000.
The acting chief also presented the HERO program report for August as submitted by Jodi Livecchi. They performed well checks, assisted with home repair products, assessed a patient for fall risks and replaced out-of-date smoke detectors. Other Business In other business, the trustees:
•Approved the purchase of a power stair chair for EMS at a cost of $16,387.
•Declared as surplus fire department equipment including a 2009 ambulance, deck gun, 10 sets of headsets, manual stair chair, mass casualty vests, shelving and cabinets. The items will be placed for sale on GovDeals, said the fire chief.
•Learned that the cost for winter rock salt through the ODOT salt contract is $48.97 per ton, which is down from last year’s price of more than $53 per ton.
•Entered into executive session and afterward authorized administrator Mike Hampton to enter into a contract with Monica Evans as finance director.
They also entered into a 90day contract for up to 120 hours per week as needed with former finance director Kim Underwood, to assist in training her replacement.
•Received an overview of activity in the past month from community service officer Miquael Warren. The department is several weeks into the Citizens Police Academy, which is going well, she said.
She also reminds residents that Trunk or Treat will be held Monday, October 21 at the township hall lot from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
•Paid bills from September 4 to 17 totaling $32,878. They also approved electronic payments from August 30 to September 12 of $323,710, which includes the biweekly payroll of $302,526.
The next trustees meeting will be at 5 p.m., Tuesday, October 15, in the township meeting hall, 7617 Angola Road, and is open to the public.
