Springfield BOE acts on personnel

At the October 9 meeting, the Springfield board of education took action on a number of personnel issues including six resignations.

The board accepted resignations from Brooke Sellers, SHS science teacher, effective November 8; Emily Wesley, Holloway music instructor, October 4; Nathaniel White, SHS assistant wrestling coach, September 29; Lanova Cunningham, 4.0 hour Holloway food service, October 21; Christina Garcia, 3.5 hour SHS food service, September 16, and Elaine Jaquay, 4 hour SMS food service, October 28.

They awarded casual labor contracts to nine employees. They are Anne Bishop, Curtis Cunningham, Nathan Dixon, Elizabeth Harris, Brittany Hayden, Jessica Kirwen, Barbara Mohr, Sherice Thomas and Victoria Tyson.

Changes in assignment were approved for Karen Willis, from 8 hour districtwide float custodian to 8 hour night custodian at the administration building, and Philip Butler, from SHS 8 hour night custodian to districtwide 8 hour float custodian.

The board awarded supplemental contracts to Scott Bachman and Katie Bylow, evening school.

They also awarded tutor/out of school instruction/homebound to the following licensed employees: Bonita Adams, Gina Ciminillo, Natalie Kalo and Robin Sears, homebound instruction, out of school instruction, tutor; Eric Bachar, Scott Bachman, Jenna Boyers, Andrea Foote, Eleanor Kosek, Lisa Meeker and Amanda Smith, tutors; Katie Bylow, out of school instruction, tutor; Brandy Klena and Sarah Vaughn, homebound instruction and tutor; Carrie Pratt and Michelle Thomas, homebound instruction, out of school instruction; Danielle Stebli, homebound instruction. Other Business In other business, the school board:

•Contracted with the Stepping Stone Group for special education aides at an hourly rate of $36.

•Approved a plan and policy for identifying gifted children.

•Entered into an agreement with A. Barrett Academy LLC, for the education of a special needs student.

•Approved the 2025-26 school calendar, with students slated to arrive on August 15 –grades six, nine and 12, and August 18–grades seven, eight, 10 and 11. The school year will end on May 27, 2026.

Winter and spring breaks will be December 22 to January 2 and March 30 to April 6, respectively.

•Entered into executive session to discuss specialized details of security, but took no action afterward.

•Approved three requests to attend professional development meetings.

•Commended several employees for their outstanding efforts as instructional leaders with the new Fish Tank ELA curriculum.

They are kindergarten– Barb Eckhart and Carrie Young; first grade–Cydney Kuchek; second–Kelly Deisher; third–Jenni Lenart; fourth–Nichol Riston, and fifth–Jennifer Hendrix.

Heard an overview of activities at Holloway from Principal Nelle Ratliff. She noted that the school is getting a brand-new bee observation hive using a Springfield Foundation grant.

•Watched the Ohio auditor of state’s fraud training video, and the board members are in compliance.

The next board of education meeting will be at 4:15 p.m., Wednesday, October 23, in the meeting room of the administration building, 6924 Spring Valley Drive, Holland, and is open to the public.
