CATHERINE “KAY” GALLAGHER
Catherine “Kay” Gallagher passed away September 28, 2018, at the age of 93, in Sarasota, Florida. She was born April 25, 1925, to Kathryn Joyce and Martin Connelly in Ridgway, Pennsylvnia. As a child, Kay was a “tom boy.” She enjoyed and excelled in many sports. Of all the sports, her passion was golf, and she described herself as a historian of the game. She loved playing golf, played in numerous tournaments, was frequently the club champion and brought home many trophies. Kay met John Gallagher in 1946 while he was recovering from injuries sustained in WWII at Crile Veteran’s Hospital in Parma, Ohio. Kay was in training to be a cadet nurse. Kay and John were married in September 1948 and began their married life in Toledo. Kay began her labor of love, raising seven children and making a home in Perrysburg. In 1986, Kay and John moved to Naples, Florida. She enjoyed year-round swimming, tennis and golf, including two holes-in-one. Kay was a friend of Bill and Lois, and to further their good work, Kay founded the first Al-Anon group in Marco Island, Florida, over 32 years ago. So many people have enjoyed and have been comforted by Kay’s friendship and compassion. In 2014, she moved to Sarasota to be closer to her children. She lived at the Fountains and loved bingo, trivia, exercise classes and music events. She mostly enjoyed visiting with her many new friends. In Kay’s own words, “she is survived by seven children whom she loved dearly and was very proud of their accomplishments.” Jane (Don) Fuller, John (Patti) Gallagher, Mark Gallagher, Mike (Debbie) Gallagher, Maurita (David R., Sr.) Krieger, Caren (Tom) Eppler, Joyce Gallagher. Also close to Kay’s heart were Shelley McFarland, Jeri Sue Dahmer and Sharon Haeflinger as well was Kay’s grandchildren, Scott (Janet) Shannon, Rod (Claire) Fuller, Patrick (Karen) Fuller, Zach Krieger, David R. (Alison) Krieger Jr., Kristina (Dave) Green, Kevin (Amanda) Gallagher, Lauren Gallagher, Colin Gallagher Rossi, Ryan (Candace) Eppler, and Sarah Eppler, and one great-granddaughter, Violet Gagel Gallagher. She is survived by her sisters, Mary Connelly Weidert and Rita Connelly from Austin, Texas, and Mary’s children, Bill, Robert (Mimi) and Diane (Steve) Morris, and grandnieces and nephew, Robin Breazier, Stephanie Morris and Will Morris. Kay was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Gallagher in 2003 and her granddaughter, Morgan Lynn Gallagher (2004). A memorial service honoring Kay will be at a later date.
