One of the first signs of spring is the return of male red-winged blackbirds, arriving early to stake out nesting territories. These common birds love to make their home in treelines along ditches and in marshy areas, including Howard Marsh Metropark. The rich scarlet shoulder patch on its black-feathered body makes it easy to identify.

Jean M. Whitmore, age 88, of Toledo’s Point Place community, passed away March 29, 2020. She was born May 6, 1931, in Toledo, Ohio, to Raymond and Edna (Herman) Cummerow. Jean was a graduate of Whitney Vocational High School, where she studied food service. A homemaker, she was a loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Jean enjoyed spending winters in Florida and trips to the casino. She loved cooking, fishing and camping.
