Authors, Animals and Art planned for Saturday

March is National Reading Month and two local children’s authors have teamed up to inspire young readers through animals, illustrations and art.

Katie Maskey and Allison Aey were scheduled to be part of the Katherine Schwarzenegger Book Fair at Lourdes University on March 4. The event was canceled by Ms. Schwarzenegger, but the authors were determined to host the activity for local children. The authors have joined Art Lab 419 for the two-hour event, Authors, Animals and Art.

On Saturday March 4, from 10 a.m. to noon, reading enthusiasts can visit Art Lab 419, 5380 Monroe Street, Toledo.

Ms. Maskey, author of the “Ferdinand With The Extra Toes” series, has published three books starring a very special cat named Ferdinand whose adventures teach kids to embrace their difference and the unique traits of others.

Ms. Aey, executive director of Nature’s Nursery wildlife rescue, has published two books about wildlife that help to share the mission of the organization and the wild animals they serve. Both authors will have books for sale and be available for signing and photos. In addition to the author meet and greet, attendees can meet the Nature’s Nursery barred owl, Moon; watch children’s book illustrator Don Lee create cartoon characters and paint along with Art Lab 419 to make a canvas painting of their favorite book character.

A percentage of book sales will benefit Nature’s Nursery to fund educational programs and wildlife rehabilitation.

The event is free to attend with books available for purchase and an added fee to participate in animal painting.
