BOE approves OAPSE contract

Renewal of a contract with the Ohio Association of Public School Employees topped the agenda at the September 28 board meeting.

The board approved a three-year contract with OAPSE, which calls for pay increases of 3 percent in the first two years with a wage reopener in the third year, explained Ryan Lockwood, treasurer.

He noted there were no changes in healthcare percentages. “But we handle 90 percent of healthcare issues in a committee made up of both unions and the administration.”

There are about 91 Springfield Schools employees who are members of

OAPSE.

Personnel

The school board took action on several personnel matters.

They issued a one-year contract to Brittany Hayden, speech language pathologist, effective October 10, and one-year classified contracts to Dawn Balonek, 3 hour Holloway food service; Jennifer Murphy, change of assignment from Holland Intermediate principal secretary to centralized enrollment coordinator, and Erin Sheller, 3 hour Dorr food service.

A casual labor contract was awarded to Laura Dauer for stadium cleanup and Kyjuan Grace, casual labor and activities.

Pupil activity permits were approved for Christopher Burns, SHS bowling head coach; Megan Cantu, SHS dance coach; Rachel Dudukovich, SHS associate athletic director; Jessie Hesselbein, SMS track coach; Clifton Hodges, SHS varsity girls basketball head coach; Erik Knapp, SHS wrestling head coach; Alexia Koepke, SHS gymnastics coach, and Kyle Linehan, SHS varsity boys basketball head coach.

The board terminated the employment of Austin Farnsel, substitute teacher, effective September 22, They also accepted the resignation of Laura Siegel, speech language pathologist, as of September 19, and the retirement of Patrick Livingston, groundskeeping/ maintenance, effective November 2. A stipend for this school year was awarded to Nicole Medjesky, algebra II during planning of the first trimester.

They also hired as substitute teachers Dorianne Cox, Amber Ferguson, Jessica Holmes and Sierra Tack.

Patricia Zimmerman was hired as a substitute secretary.

In addition, they approved translator contracts for 2022-23 to Fatima Jarouche and Jehan Younes.

Other Business

In other business, the school board:

•Approved the annual appropriations resolution for fiscal year 2023.

•Approved purchase orders to Torrence Sound, $12,415, for the new public address system at the high school; Severin Intermediate Holdings, $12,014, and ProMedica Central Physicians group, $25,574, for school nurses.

•Approved the 2022-23 school year bus routes.

•Accepted a donation of school supplies and other items from Walmart, valued at $16,000.

•Approved the job descriptions for LPDC chairperson and member; pep band advisor at the middle and high schools; Power of the Pen middle school advisor, and Quiz Bowl advisor at SHS and SMS.

•Entered into executive session to discuss employment, discipline, demotion and compensation, but took no action afterward.

The next board of education meeting is at 4:15 p.m., Thursday, October 27 at the administration building, 6900 Hall Street, Holland, and is open to the public.
