Artist and co-owner of Bonita Bead, Anita Tristan has created a special pendant to celebrate and raise funds for Toledo Zoo’s twin polar bear cubs.
On December 1, 24-yearold Mama Crystal gave birth to the cubs. The father, Nuka, is 18 years old.
“I designed a story that reflects Crystal and her beloved cubs with a hand-stamped pendant necklace,” Ms. Tristan said.
The pendant required specific tools to create a clear, accurate impression stamping on a metal surface. “It is a process of one stamp-at-a-time. What fun I have creating a story that reflects Crystal and the twins,” she commented.
“When adding the polar bears and the background to the layout, it felt like the perfect combination for a dose of joy.”
For each purchase, 20 percent will be donated to the zoo to support the cubs. “Creating jewelry like this piece celebrates our community,” she said.
Polar bears are symbolic to family, togetherness, independence and peace. In the spring, the zoo will reveal the gender of the cubs.
