Lucas County Engineer Mike Pniewski kick started 2024 with a number of requests that were greenlighted by the county commissioners.
At the January 8 meeting, the commissioners approved the engineer’s annual township meeting schedule. He plans to meet with Springfield Township officials at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 19, and Washington Township at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 21.
They also approved a hearing date for 2 p.m., Wednesday January 30, to consider vacating a portion of Briarfield Drive in Monclova Township, and certified highway system mileage in the county at 260.435.
Mr. Pniewski was appointed to the Ohio Public Works Commission District 12 integrating committee with the second seat to be held by Commissioner Pete Gerken.
Contracts were awarded to Vernon Nagel, Inc. of Napoleon for the 2024 bridge repair project for $254,111 and Ebony Construction of Sylvania for the Holland Sylvania Road resurfacing project between Sylvania and Central avenues. The company bid was for $1.59 million, just below the engineer’s estimate of $1.6 million.
Change orders were approved with U.S. Utility Contractor Company for the King Road and University Parks trail signal improvement for $1,967, and A&A Safety Inc. for Monclova crosswalks at a cost of $1,366.
The commissioners authorized Mr. Pniewski to apply for an H2Ohio Rivers Initiative chloride reduction grant of $75,000 from the Ohio EPA.
Mr. Pniewski received approval of the department’s six-year capital improvement program which runs through 2029.
The commissioners also approved additional rights-ofway for the Monclova Road bridge replacement project, compensating Patricia Martinez, $2,700 and Terral and Erika Yoder, trustees, $16,750.
