Council discusses, takes no action on items

Several items were discussed, but no action taken at Holland village council’s Tuesday meeting due to a lack of quorum.

At the September 5 meeting, Mayor Lee Irons explained that councilmen Scott Brown and Ryan Spangler had excused absences, and Councilman Nate Gaubert had something come up at the last minute, necessitating his absence.

With three members not present, the mayor said council could discuss but not vote on agenda items.

Councilman Mike Bettinger addressed plans to acquire a new dump truck for the street department.

Mr. Bettinger said the specifications are prepared and will be sent out to area dealers for price quotes. “Hopefully, they will fall within the budgeted amount so we can move forward,” he added.

The councilman also spoke on plans to crack seal village roads. He said $7,500 had been set aside for the work, but the lowest bid was $8,000. He will readdress the issue at council’s next meeting.

Mayor Irons informed those present that the village had received a grant for Spectrum Drive improvements and an engineering contract with Kleinfelder is pending council’s approval.

The mayor addressed an issue with lighting at the Mc-Cord Road roundabout which had not been operating. “The lights are now working,” he said, adding the problem appeared to be a blown fuse which shorted out the lighting.

Councilman Roger Burditt ended the meeting with an inquiry as to the status of the barbershop building which had a fire a number of months ago.

“It is definitely coming down, but I don’t have a demolition date yet,” the mayor replied, noting that a few items need to be taken care of before the structure can be torn down.

Mayor Irons said nothing else can be built on the site due to the size of the lot and zoning codes regarding setback requirements.

Council’s next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 19, in council chambers, 1245 Clarion Avenue, and is open to the public. ~Jane Maiolo
