Former twp. firefighter under investigation for theft of funds

A former Springfield Township firefighter is under investigation for alleged theft of funds from the fire department’s union membership.

Jeffrey VanDromme resigned from the department January 19. “I am tendering this resignation in lieu of further investigation into certain allegations that have been lodged against me,” he wrote.

The firefighter also stated that by resigning in lieu of investigation “my separation from employment shall be considered not in good standing” and agreed to forfeit any payout of accrued vacation time.

Administrator Mike Hampton was informed of the allegations against the firefighter on January 18 from the union president. “It was confirmed by self-admission to the union that he did indeed steal funds. We as administration had an obligation to investigate per the employee handbook,” he said, adding, “Jeff wanted to resign, and we let him resign under investigation.”

The administrator said monies taken were from individuals contributing to the union fund. “No taxpayer dollars were stolen,” he emphasized.

Mr. Hampton said the Lucas County sheriff’s department is investigating the case.

Mr. VanDromme had been with the department since 1997 in both part-time and full-time status.

In light of the township allegations, he also retired January 19 from several Springfield Local Schools positions. Those are SHS assistant athletic director, substitute bus driver and lunchroom and recess monitor.
