Frogs signal warmer weather

With the arrival of spring Mother Nature is turning up the volume on her vocals. Visitors to Metroparks Toledo and any of the multipurpose trails throughout the park district can hear the song of frogs as they provide the season’s background music.

Chorus frogs–tiny in stature, but great in volume– are gathering in vernal pools. As numbers grow, so does the volume as the males sing to attract females.

In many locations in the Oak Openings region, the song can be deafening.

Only the males sing, and they use so much energy belting out their song–which can be described as the raspy sound of running your finger over the teeth of a plastic comb–that only about half the males will be singing at any one time.
