Glenwood Lutheran Church shares progress on ‘The Change Wall’ mural

Glenwood Lutheran Church, 2545 Monroe Street, has begun work on “The Change Wall” mural. The project is the work of local muralist Dean Davis and takes inspiration from an illustration in Amanda Gorman’s children’s anthem “Change Sings.” The original illustration was created by Loren Long. In the book, a young girl leads others through a musical journey where they learn that they have the power to make changes in their community, the world and themselves.

John Eikost, a local art supporter, helped bring the project to life. “It’s such a striking image and I thought it would be beautiful to have it on a mural” Mr. Eikost said. “As a historic, inclusive and multicultural church located next to the Toledo Museum of Art, Glenwood Lutheran felt like an ideal fit.”

Along with a portrait of Martin Luther King Jr., the mural will feature action words that remind community members of ways that they can turn their words into action. The project has been named “The Change Wall” in hopes that it will inspire individuals to make necessary changes to improve lives for others.

Financial support has been provided by the Northwest Ohio Synod of the ELCA, a beautification grant from the Old West End, Ascension Lutheran Church, donations at the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration and many individual donations.

Fund-raising efforts are ongoing. To support the project, visit glenwoodlutheran church.org or email glenwood pastor@gmail.com to reach Paster Chris Hanley.
