Principal’s Message

Frigid cold temperatures have kept everyone cooped up the last couple weeks, so hoping a warm trend the next couple days allows students more time outside. January ended with some pretty dicey weather, so we were glad we had reminded families to ensure your contact information was updated. If the start of school is delayed, canceled or updates during the school day are needed, we rely on the information provided to notify you.

The end of January also allowed us to review the results of our mid-year assessments, which have shown some tremendous growth by the students. Shout out to all the parents for supporting their child’s reading and math practice at home, and shout out to their hard working teachers. Holland Elementary is a special place.

We’d also like to ask that you help the school district welcome our newest school resource offer, retired Deputy Ralph Green. Deputy Green is well known for his work in schools and his time as referee for high school basketball games across the area. We look forward to Holland students meeting him in their classrooms and the many chances that will occur to establish relationships.

What’s Mr. G up to these days?

Let’s talk integrity, or can I say we have been. We wrapped up our lessons by discussing difficult choices and reflecting on quotes from famous figures in history, such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Sir Francis Bacon. Our fifth grade Kindness Club has been helping many of our kindergartners and first graders on practicing letters and sight words.

“To the world you may be one person; but to one person you may be the world.”

Electronic Use Policy Please Read

Springfield School students may not carry Smart Watches, cellular telephones, personal gaming and other handheld electronic or entertainment communication devices with them while at school or on school property. These devices must be turned off and securely stored in a locker during the instructional day.

Elementary students must have an approved written request from a parent to bring an electronic device to school. A copy needs to be reviewed and approved by the principal and kept on file in the main office. Electronic communication or electronic entertainment devices may not be turned on or used during the official instructional day.

Students who are permitted to possess electronic communication devices may use the devices on school buses while riding to and from school, so long as the use of the devices is not disruptive or does not interfere with the safe operation of the school bus. They may not be used while entering or leaving a school bus. Students are expected to obey the bus driver’s instructions regarding the use of electronic devices.

It is the students’ responsibility to ensure that their devices are turned off and stored in school lockers during the school day or at a schoolsponsored activity, unless other permission has been granted in writing by the school principal. First time violators of this policy are reported to the principal, who confiscates the device and holds it until the end of the school day. Parents are required to come to school to pick up the device; it will not be returned to the student.

The district assumes no liability if these devices are broken, lost or stolen. Administrative time will not be used to search for or investigate events surrounding lost or stolen items. Notices of this policy are posted in a central location in each school building and in the student handbooks.
