SCHOOL NEWS

From the Desk of Principal Andy Evans Kids Heart Challenge 2023 Our school had so much fun kicking off this year’s Kids Heart Challenge. We traveled the globe with this year’s heart heroes, who emphasized the importance of things like helping others, drinking water, getting enough sleep and saying no to tobacco and vaping.

Your student will get an awesome wristband just for joining at 2.heart.org/site/ TR?fr_id=7558&pg=com pany&company_id=389798 or using the KHC app.

Important Information about School This will only impact students in Ms. Klena and Mrs. Berry’s classrooms. However, many of you have students in other elementary buildings.

Springfield Local Schools will embark on a new journey to improve foundational reading and increase reading outcomes for all students. In an effort to improve reading achievement and growth, we are providing professional development for the following educators during the week of May 15 to 19:

•General educators in second and third grade.

•Intervention specialists in kindergarten through third grade.

•Intervention specialists (special education classrooms) in kindergarten through fifth grade.

From May 15 to 19, several of our educators in Springfield Local Schools will participate in Phonics First training through Brainspring Academy. Therefore, classes will be canceled for all students in second and third grade (general education settings) and kindergarten through fifth grade (special education classrooms) during that week. Special education classrooms will notify families.

The teachers will participate in 30 hours of multisensory, Orton Gillingham professional development over the course of five full days. The training will provide teachers with instructional strategies and materials to support whole-group and small-group classroom instruction aligned with the Science of Reading. Additionally, the training will fulfill the Ohio Department of Education’s Dyslexia Mandate.

Overdue Library Books Teachers will be sending home slips for overdue library books. Currently there are about 250 books on the overdue list, which is a lot for the size of the library. Unfortunately, if students do not return the overdue books, the next step is parent phone calls/emails/letters.

Parents, please encourage your students to return these items.

VIP Day

The Holland Parents Club will be hosting separate VIP Days for fourth and fifth grade. Rather than Muffins for Moms or Donuts for Dad, we will be having Very Important Person day. More information will be coming out, but here are the details so far:

•Each student will invite one important person in their life for donuts and a drink

•Fourth grade will be the morning of Friday, February 10.

•Fifth grade will be the morning of Friday, February 17.

•Each team will attend at an assigned time slot and will be down there for 30 minutes

•Every student will be able to attend even if they don’t have a person coming in.

•VIP can be any important person in their life they choose to invite. Can only invite one.

Valentine’s Day

Keeping consistent with our previous holidays, we will not be having official Valentine’s Day parties. This means, we will not be asking students to bring in Valentines for exchanging. However, teachers are encouraged to do activities with their students.

Gamers of the Week

Each week our teams nominate one student as their gamer of the week. The category they are being selected for is integrity.
