LSWCD to offer cover crop and fish sale in October

The Lucas Soil and Water Conservation District (LSWCD) is offering a fish and cover crop sale this fall.

The district has partnered with Walnut Creek Seeds of Carroll, Ohio, to offer two fall cover crops, a multi-species mix and Austrian winter pea, which are well-suited for northwest Ohio gardens.

Cover crops planted in the fall help protect the soil over Winter and revitalize it for spring planting. Each mix ranges from $6 to $7 per pound bag. The deadline to order is Monday, October 4, and purchases will be ready for pick-up on or after October 15.

The LSWCD also is partnering with Fender’s Fish Hatchery of Baltic, Ohio, to offer new and established pond owners the opportunity to stock their ponds conveniently and at a low cost.

Anyone considering stocking their pond in the near future should take advantage of this opportunity. Five different types of fish fingerlings, ranging from one to six inches in size depending on species, are available through the sale for less than $1 each.

The species include Largemouth Bass, Yellow Perch, Channel Catfish, Bluegill and Fathead Minnows.

The deadline to order is Tuesday, October 12 and pick-up is Tuesday, October 19, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., at the Lucas County fairgrounds.

Orders also may be placed at the district office in Maumee. Both sales require pre-ordering–cash, check, or credit card will be accepted.
