Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission approves $254 million budget for projects

The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission has approved a budget of $254 million for capital improvement projects across the 241-mile toll road.

This includes nearly $238 million for projects beginning in 2024 and the completion of prior year projects. About $16.4 million remains in uncommitted funds for unforeseen expenditures in 2024, explained Chris Matta, chief engineer.

More than $162 million of the 2024 capital plan is allocated for roadway and bridge projects, and nearly 142 lane miles of pavement will be resurfaced. Pavement at a toll plaza interchange will be reconstructed, and an extensive amount of work will be performed on 26 bridges.

This year’s projects include:

•Completing pavement replacement and the removal of the old Westgate Toll Plaza at milepost 2 and continuation of the pavement resurfacing between mileposts 14 and 27 in Williams County;

•Interchange pavement reconstruction of toll plaza 34 at State Route 108 in Wauseon and work on overhead bridges in Fulton County at township roads 3, 12-1, 17 and 22;

•Mainline resurfacing between mileposts 51 and 55 and 64 to 74 with a bridge deck overlay at State Route 420 in Wood County;

•Bridge deck replacements in Sandusky, Erie and Lorain counties;

•Continuation of the bridge replacement over Tinker’s Creek at milepost 185.6 in Summit and Portage counties, and bridge work in Portage County, and

•Mainline resurfacing from milepost 230 to 236, replacing U.S. Route 224 bridge over the turnpike, and the completion of pavement work at Eastgate Toll Plaza, milepost 239 at the Ohio/Pennsylvania state line.

In addition, planned capital expenditures include the completion of the toll collection system modernization program and the design, furnishing and installation of Intelligent Transportation System cameras and sign boards along the turnpike’s mainline.
