Apart from the major bridge replacement project that straddles the border of Summit and Portage counties, major construction along the Ohio Turnpike has been halted for the winter months.
This past construction season, work focused on continuing projects associated with the modernization of the toll collection system and on bridges.
Work on bridges was a major focus in 2023 and will continue over the next several years.
Mainline bridges were completed over state Route 109 and the DT&I Railroad in Fulton County, and the State Route 510 bridge in Erie County.
The mainline bridge over an abandoned railroad at milepost 99.1 in Sandusky County was removed and replaced with embankment and roadway.
Overhead bridges that were redecked are the turnpike ramp bridge at the State Route 57 interchange, Race Road in Lorain County and the Stearns Road bridge in Cuyahoga County.
Crews completed the bridge replacement carrying State Route 21 traffic over the turnpike and performed substantial rehabilitation work of the large Cuyahoga River Bridge in Summit County.
In addition, two bridges were repaired following collisions from over-height vehicles.
Roadway projects included the pavement replacement from the Indiana/Ohio border to the existing Westgate toll plaza, the beginning of a mainline resurfacing project from milepost 14.8 to 27.5 in Williams County, and the resurfacing of the interchange ramps at toll plaza 118 in Erie County.
