Once a tradition, always a tradition

After the passing of their fourth groundhog more than a year ago, Charlie and Terri Hoag, of Springfield Township, decided to end their annual Groundhog Day celebration. For family and friends who packed the house for the yearly pre-dawn event, saying goodbye to a tradition is difficult.

Such is the case for Peggy Murawski, who for two decades participated in the pastry contest, often taking the top prize for her unique creations.

This year, Mrs. Murawski once again was inspired to put her talents to work with this groundhog on a porch swing as he “swings into spring.”

The eyes are a throwback to the second groundhog, affectionately nicknamed “Old Blue Eyes,” a rare feature in a groundhog.
