On August 9, Springfield Local Schools dedicated the new administration building after a long-serving school board member. The Everett W. Harris Administrative and Educational Complex recognizes the five-decade school board member and Springfield graduate.
The ceremony began with Cub Scout Troop 144 rolling out a blue carpet, followed by the Springfield High School JROTC presenting colors. After the Pledge of Allegiance, members of the SHS band played the National Anthem.
Pastor Steve Smithberger of All Saints Lutheran Church gave the invocation, and board member Ken Musch delivered opening comments. He noted the building was named after Mr. Harris not only for his 50 years of service to the district, but also his commitment to the Holland/Springfield community, “and the environment he helped to nurture with open, honest communication.”
U.S. Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur commended Mr. Harris for his dedication to the community, presenting him a flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol on August 4. “It is my great privilege to present this flag,” she said, adding, the district, parents and educators “should be very proud” of their school system. She pointed out that through the JROTC program, Springfield has had numerous students appointed to military academies.
Mr. Harris thanked everyone for the recognition. “For me it’s overwhelming. I deeply appreciate everyone who came here today.” Noting all those past and present who led the district, he said, “I’m very grateful to all of you who have been part of leading Springfield. You all participated in making it a super, super school district.”
Following his presentation, Treasurer Ryan Lockwood spoke on how renovations to the building at 6924 Spring Valley Drive were achieved. He noted that most of the funding came from federal COVID relief funds, which enabled the district to repurpose the structure into a facility that combines the administration with educational innovation, instruction and support for students.
Superintendent Matt Geha concluded the ceremony, inviting visitors to tour the building and view a plaque that is hung in the main entry area recognizing Mr. Harris.
