Springfield BOE seeks true valuations of six parcels

The Springfield School District board of education is asking the Lucas County Board of Revision to reconsider valuations on six parcels.

At the March 21 meeting, the school board authorized treasurer Ryan Lockwood to file a complaint with the board of revision asking that the true value of the properties be increased to reflect the sale prices.

The properties and their sale prices are 1322 Bernath Parkway, Toledo, $2,562,500; 1365 South McCord Road, Holland, $4,000,000; 1401 East Mall Drive, Holland, $2,200,000; 6641 Airport Highway, Holland, $5,400,000; 0 Shamrock Drive, Holland, $12,580,000, and 6639 Airport Highway, Holland, $2,600,000.

Personnel The school board took action on a number of personnel matters.

The board accepted a retirement resignation from Tom Mockensturm, SMS English teacher, effective May 31.

Superintendent Matt Geha described Mr. Mockensturm as “the happiest, most engaging teacher we have,” noting he was the catalyst for the middle school’s medieval faire, which is now a school tradition.

“We want to thank Tom for all of his years with the district,” the superintendent added.

The board also terminated Christopher Williams, an SHS substitute teacher, effective March 18, for failure to adhere to terms of the substitute teaching requirements.

Awarded a one-year contract for 2024-25 was Ashley Zeiler, middle school Title I support staff.

A personal service contract was issued to Kylee Rogers, SHS drama choreographer, and a pupil activity permit was approved for Bradley Cox, SHS volunteer baseball coach, for 2023-24.

Pupil activity permits for 2024-25 also were granted to Bradley Cox, SHS volunteer girls tennis coach; Trey Materi, SMS football assistant coach eighth grade; Antwaan Ellison, SMS football assistant coach seventh grade, and William Gatling, SMS football head coach seventh grade.

They employed Robert Edwards as a four-hour bus aide, effective March 18.

A stipend contract was approved for Barb Eckhart, substitute summer tutoring instructor.

Other Business

In other business, the board of education:

•Heard from Mr. Geha about a recent close call for a bus driver and students. Mr. Geha said a pickup truck blew through a stop sign, striking the sign as it passed through the intersection.

Bus video shows the bus lights were on, but a clear view of the truck was not available, in part due to poor weather conditions that morning.

The Lucas County sheriff’s office is continuing to look for the driver of the vehicle, he added.

•Tabled a decision on the hiring of a school resource officer through the Village of Holland Police Department.

Mr. Geha said attorneys for both entities are still working on the language for the agreement.

•Commended board member Sherri Koback for being recognized as a distinguished board member by the Ohio School Boards Association. Mrs. Koback has served on the school board for 15 years.

•Approved one request to attend a professional development day. Jamie Filipiak will attend a food and nutrition meeting in April.

The next school board meeting will be at 4:15 p.m., Wednesday, April 10 at the administration building, 6924 Spring Valley Drive, Holland, and is open to the public.
