Springfield Township firefighters were kept busy this past Sunday on a pair of fires in two township locations.
The first fire broke out before noon October 16 in the bedroom of an upper level apartment at Fox Chase Apartments, 7345 Nightingale Drive.
Seven units from Springfield, one unit from Monclova Township and two from Sylvania Township responded.
It took firefighters about 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control, explained Deputy Chief Dave Moore, adding that crews were on scene for two hours.
The fire was determined to have started from a lit candle and has been ruled accidental, he said. Damage was estimated at $200,000.
The second fire started after 7 p.m. in a pole barn at 8322 Nebraska Avenue.
Springfield fire responded with seven units. The department was assisted by Monclova Township with three units and Sylvania Township, two. “The tender task force was activated as well, which brought one unit each from the Air Guard Fire and Richfield fire,” Deputy Chief Moore said.
It took firefighters one hour to bring the fire under control and crews remained on the scene for more than four hours dousing any hot spots.
Cause of the fire remains undetermined, and the total loss is estimated at $1.5 million.
Both fires were investigated by the state fire marshal’s office. No one was injured in either blaze nor were any pets.
