Springfield Twp. recognizes retiring firefighters

Two retiring firefighters were recognized by the Springfield Township trustees for their service to the community. At the August 28 meeting, Captain David Bennett was lauded for his long career at the fire department, which began in October 1977. He was promoted to engineer in 1981; chief engineer in December 1990, and captain in September 1992. The captain was hired full time in January 2005.

“Captain Bennett has served the department in the capacity as fire prevention officer where he conducted inspections of businesses and fireworks displays, and performed arson investigations,” said Fire Chief Barry Cousino. He also taught and mentored numerous firefighters over his career. “We extend to Captain Bennett our congratulations on his well-earned retirement,” the chief said.

The trustees also accepted the retirement resignation of David Langendonk, whose career at the department started in November 2000, when he was hired as a dispatcher. He was made a full-time firefighter/paramedic in 2005. “Firefighter/paramedic Langendonk has been awarded with a Paramedic of the Year proclamation for his selfless dedication while off duty, saving a 2-year-old child,” Chief Cousino explained. Mr. Langendonk plans to utilize his knowledge and experience to educate high school students at Sylvania Northview and Southview through the district’s medical technology program.

The chief added, “Through his different roles and responsibilities, he has been instrumental in the protection of our community and personally responsible for saving countless lives over his 23-plus year career.”
