Trustees approve pay raise for non-bargaining employees

Following an executive session at the December 11 meeting, the Springfield Township trustees voted to give pay increases to nonbargaining employees.

The board agreed to a one time $400 lump sum pay, as well as a 3 percent wage increase.

The lump sum payment will appear on the employees final pay period in December and wage increase will take effect on January 1, 2024.

Other Business

In other business, the trustees:

•Accepted a contribution to the township parks from Jim Hood of Community Homecoming Corporation.

“It was difficult with Gary’s [Leasure] passing, but we still have $579.19 to provide,” said Jim Hood of the CHC.

When asked if the organization was able to continue its Christmas shopping for Springfield Schools children in need, Mr. Hood said that with changes in leadership of the program at the school district, they were unable to obtain names.

“So we sponsored kids at Anne Grady. We shopped this past weekend,” he added.

•Reviewed the planning and zoning report for November.

Jacob Barnes, planning director, said they issued 17 permits and collected $2,110. The majority of permits were for signs, eight; followed by additions, two; and garage, shed, fencing, temporary banner, new commercial, See zoning compliance letter and new occupant, one each.

Mr. Barnes said the new commercial permit at 1414 Spring Meadows Drive is for a TARTA shelter.

In other zoning news, the planning director said the board of zoning appeals met November 30 and approved a variance request submitted by Ryan Tarris for accessory building square footage at 7910 Dorr Street.

•Renewed membership with the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments for 2024 at a cost of $9,835.

Set meeting dates for the board of trustees in 2024. The trustees will meet the second and fourth Mondays of the month with the exception of Tuesdays, May 28, October 15 and November 12 due to holidays.

The board also approved holiday closings in 2024. Township offices will be closed for the following holidays: New Year’s, January 1; Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 15; Presidents Day, February 19; Memorial Day, May 27; Independence Day, July 4; Labor Day, September 2; Columbus Day, October 14; Veterans Day, November 11; Thanksgiving, November 28 and November 29, and Christmas, December 25.

•Submitted a request for a 75 percent deferment for the Angola Road sanitary sewer improvement because the parcel serves as public open space.

In a letter to the Lucas County sanitary engineer, Mike Hampton, township administrator wrote, “we understand the need for infrastructure improvements and the subsequent assessments to parcels that may benefit from those improvements. However, we believe that the full assessment does not match the benefit of the infrastructure improvement to Homecoming Park.”

•Reappointed two board members to the joint economic development district for fouryear terms. They are Mathew Knapp, chair of the board, and John DeRaedt, employee representative.

•Paid bills from November 28 to December 11 of $135,758, which included a sewer line project by Lucas County, $49,819 and a final Ohio Public Works Commission project payment of $21,774 to Bowers Asphalt.

They also approved electronic payments from November 24 to December 7, totaling $614,293. which included the biweekly payroll of $286,019.

Due to the Christmas holiday, the next trustees meeting will be at 5 p.m., Tuesday, December 26, in the township meeting room, 7617 Angola Road, and is open to the public.
