Twp. trustees review police report, discuss incident at Community Homecoming Park

May and early June were busy times for the Lucas County sheriff’s deputies who patrol Springfield Township.

At the June 26 meeting, the trustees reviewed the report and questioned an incident that occurred at the annual Strawberry Fest, which resulted in the festival closing early one evening.

Sergeant Juan Martinez said an incident occurred involving fighting, and the decision was made to close down early.

According to Administrator Mike Hampton, who spoke with festival organizers, a dispute occurred involving youths.

Trustee Andy Glenn questioned whether organizers had adequate security, noting that a beer tent was taking place that night.

He believes the trustees should be given a detailed report when other organizations use the park and something happens necessitating a police response.

“We should look at what we can do to fix this for next year,” he added.

The trustees also reviewed the community service officer’s report for June, commending Deputy Aalea Robertson on a detailed report.

Deputies continue to be proactive in monitoring school zones for speeding and are working with the school district’s transportation department on identifying hot spots.

Deputy Robertson listed disputes in the township and remedies that were taken. She also provided an update on community outreach efforts such as interactions with students across all grade levels.

She has planned a bike rodeo for Saturday, July 15, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the middle school parking lot, and is working on a pedal with the patrol event.

She noted that car seat instructions continue to be well attended with the next one scheduled for Wednesday, July 19 from 1 to 4 p.m., at Fire Station 51, 802 South McCord Road.

Fire Department

Deputy Chief David Moore provided the trustees with the department’s monthly report for May.

There were 429 calls for service last month in the areas served by the township, which, in addition to Springfield, include the Village of Holland and Harding, Spencer and Swanton townships.

Of those, 296 were in Springfield Township, followed by Holland, 63; Spencer, 25; Swanton, nine, and Harding, four.

Trustee Andy Glenn noted that calls in Holland “were way up. That’s one of the highest months I’ve seen for them.”

Deputy Chief Moore acknowledged that calls were up in general last month.

The department provided mutual aid to Sylvania Township, nine; Sylvania, eight; Maumee, six; Monclova Township, five; Toledo, three, and Richfield Township, one.

Of those calls, the vast majority were EMS calls, 78 percent and 22 percent were fire.

Last month, the department conducted 39 inspections, including 29 annual; seven state, and one apiece fire alarm, final remodel and hood suppression.

In addition, six site plans were reviewed and approved for Spring Meadows Nursing, 1125 Clarion Avenue; Sunshine Group Home, 6660 Garden Road; Sensational Kids Day Care, 6060 Merger Drive; Sensational Kids Too, 6222 Merger Drive; Dorr Street Group Home, 7053 Dorr Street, and All 4 You Child Developmental Center, 1007 South McCord Road.

One fire investigation was conducted for a home at 1035 Country View Lane. The kitchen fire was ruled accidental, and damage was estimated at $70,000.

The deputy chief noted that with the warmer weather, community activities picked up and included car seat fittings, fire safety lectures, fire safety presentations and CPR courses.

In other business, the trustees:

•Learned that public services completed the first round of mowing in the township.
