Twp. trustees review sheriff, fire reports

With school now back in session, Lieutenant John Leach of the Lucas County sheriff’s office reminds motorists to drive cautiously.

At the August 28 Springfield Township trustees meeting, the lieutenant announced that patrols have been increased in school zones and encouraged drivers to “slow it down.”

He pointed out the department also has been monitoring speed of vehicles on Layer Road after receiving complaints.

Between August 15 and 22, a unit was set up. The results showed that 96.42 percent were traveling at or under the posted 35 mile per hour limit with 3.58 percent over. The average violation speed was 40.47.

Lt. Leach said the department continues to investigate an instance of someone performing donuts with their vehicle in the parking lot at Walker Funeral Home on August 19.

He concluded his report with an update on the recently installed FLOCK cameras, The lieutenant said the cameras already proved invaluable in catching a suspect in a stolen vehicle.

The vehicle was caught on the cameras and the department promptly pursued it. The suspect stopped and fled the vehicle on foot, but left in the car his identification, enabling police to arrest him a short time later.

Fire Report

The trustees approved a request by Fire Chief Barry Cousino for remodeling work at Station 51.

D2 Dodson Construction LLC of Holland will replace the flooring in the training room, bathroom, office and sleeping quarters at a cost of $14,375.

The chief explained that the current tile is worn in a number of areas and coming up. “The new tile will be a water resistant product,” he added.

The trustees questioned the quote which included an additional $8,625 charge to paint the stairwells and upper level of the station.

Chief Cousino said the work can be performed by personnel who are on light duty.

His report included two resignations from Brandon Rosebrock and Jared Denman, effective August 28.

The firefighters expressed appreciation to the township for the opportunity to be part of the department, and cited other job duties and responsibilities as the reason for tendering their resignations.
