At a November 2 meeting, Holland Village Council approved a five-year contract with Ohio Compost on U.S. Route 20A to accept leaves, grass, weeds, branches and other yard waste from residents.
Councilman Mike Bettinger said the previous contract with Clean Wood was $6,000, and the new contract will only be $4,500.
“I think it’s a very good thing for the village,” he added.
Residents will only need to show their driver’s license to drop off materials.
The business is located on Sager Road/State Route 20A, between Laplante Road and Whitehouse-Spencer Road.
Mayor Lee Irons noted that residents should continue to use Clean Wood for the remainder of 2021.
Health Insurance Cost Increases
Council approved an agreement with Medical Mutual to provide health insurance for village employees at a 6.12 percent cost increase. Councilman Chad Smith
Councilman Chad Smith said the increases are frequently 10 percent, “so this was a little less than anticipated.”
The added expense will be about $1,778 more than the last contract, and benefits will remain the same.
“I think they held the line about as close as they could,” Mayor Irons said.

•Voted to submit applications for Ohio Public Works Commission funding of 2023 street improvements on Spectrum Drive and Whisperwood plats one and four.
Mayor Irons said the cost for Spectrum has yet to be determined but will cover a section about 350 feet long and include curbs, pavement and drainage.
Tim Bock, engineer with Poggemeyer Design Group, said the Whisperwood projects would cost about $570,000, and include new curbs and sidewalks.
•Approved a $10,000 payment to Springfield Township for Spring Meadows West Drive improvements.
The village agreed to pay for 200 feet of the road work where it connects to Holloway Road, according to the mayor.
“We agreed we would reimburse them $10,000 if they would include this in their project,” he added.
•Heard from Mayor Irons that some electrical work is required on a line damaged when the village’s new Christmas tree was planted at Strawberry Acres Park.
The maintenance staff even checked village records and contacted OUPS to come out and mark the area.

“It was a great location for a tree, but it didn’t work out,” he noted.
The tree’s location was moved slightly to accommodate the line, the mayor added.
Council approved an $11,125 charge to Brint Electric for the work.
•Heard from Councilman Scott Brown that the village is accepting applications for a police sergeant’s position, following the recent promotion of Lieutenant Jim Piotrowski.
•Authorized the payment of $26,656 in bills.
Council’s next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 16, at the village hall, 1245 Clarion Avenue. The meeting is open to the public.
