Village council awards Spectrum Drive project

Work on resurfacing Spectrum Drive is expected to begin in a few weeks.

At the March 5 meeting, Holland Village Council awarded the bid to Bowers Asphalt and Paving for $178,355.

According to Mayor Ryan Spangler, Kleinfelder Inc. reviewed the five bids received on March 1 and recommended the company as the lowest, and best bid.

Work on Spectrum is expected to begin April 1 and be substantially completed by June 21. All work is to be complete by June 30.

“We were pleased to get that many bids,” said Administrator Bob Bethel.

Added the mayor, “The bids came in $14,000 under the engineer’s estimate.”

Police Dept. Hire

•Council authorized Interim Police Chief Jim Piotrowski to hire Anthony Teniente as an officer after successful completion of the Owens Community College police academy.

Grant funds of $9,266 from the Ohio Department of Public Safety along with $4,000 committed by the village will be used to cover the new officer’s tuition.

The funds also will be used to pay for a second candidate yet to be decided.

The interim chief said Mr. Teniente was interviewed three times and a background Continued from page 1 check was performed.

His commander at the academy, who has known Mr. Teniente since he was a child, highly recommended him, the interim chief said, adding that his scores at the academy have been 90 percent or higher.

Administrator Bob Bethel, who sat in on an interview, described the candidate as “a very nice young man, very focused and enthusiastic about police work.”

Other Business

In other business, council:

•Reviewed the police report submitted by Interim Chief Piotrowski. He noted that with two new officers, patrols have increased as have traffic stops.

“Thefts are down, which I attribute to the additional police force,” he said.

•Approved two ordinances pertaining to supplemental appropriations and ambiguous language regarding payment of unused vacation days and floating holidays.

•Announced that village pickleball courts opened for the season on March 1.

•Learned that the village is continuing to work with Springfield schools on a contract for a school resource officer. Attorneys for both entities are working on language for the contract.

“I hope to have the final contract very soon,” said Mayor Spangler.

•Received an update on billing by the 911 Regional Council of Governments on calls for service in the village.

The mayor said the village percentage of calls in the countywide system is 0.8459 percent. “We don’t have the amount, but we know the percentage,” he said.

•Paid bills totaling $72,572.

Council’s next meeting will be at 6 p.m., Tuesday, March 19, in council chambers, 1245 Clarion Avenue, Holland, and is open to the public.
