Walker Funeral Home to host seminar on ministering grief

Walker Funeral Homes will host a seminar on “Ministering When Grief Gets Complicated.” It will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, October 12, at 5155 West Sylvania Avenue.

A light dinner will be followed by a workshop from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. To register, call 419-6661566 or send an email to kelsey@walkerfuneral homes.com The program will feature Bill Hoy, a national spokesman on grief, to assist people in churches who work with the bereaved to better understand the process of grief support.

Discussed in the fastpaced seminar are:

•How to know when there is a problem and what the congregation and leaders can do about it.

•Address the issue of when you are at the ‘edge of your competence’ and need to refer.

•Talk about the importance of faith and faith in your community.

•Discover ways to know when there is not a problem– but it just looks like one.

The workshop and materials are free but advance registration is required.

Dr. Hoy is clinical professor of medical humanities at Baylor University. With more than 35 years of experience caring for the dying and bereaved and an active churchman, he understands congregational bereavement.

Prior to his work at Baylor, he spent more than 20 years in hospice care and 15 years in pastoral ministry in southern California.
