Wolcott Guild lecture is Thurs., March 2

The Wolcott House Museum Guild in conjunction with the Maumee Branch of the Lucas County Public Library will present Julia Wiley interpreting, “The Inside Story on the Battle of Fallen Timbers” on Thursday, March 2, at 10 a.m., at the Maumee Library.

Ms. Wiley is the president of the Fallen Timbers Battlefield Preservation Commission, Inc. and devotes her spare time to solidify its place in the important history of this area. She was responsible for organizing and directing the 225th battle anniversary commemorative celebration of the decisive engaging scuffle with various Indian tribes 1that was eventually won by the Legion of General Anthony Wayne. It included inviting local dignitaries for the raising of the flag at the Visitors Center in Maumee, contacting innumerable re-enactors representing the Native Americans, British troops and Anthony Wayne’s Legion soldiers and inviting drum and fife corps to perform.

With permission from the Metroparks, Side Cut Park was alive with a simulated battle between those forces.

A few days after the battlefield re-enactment, Native American chiefs from the tribes who had been in the foray, spoke in a tent to a well attended forum of history enthusiasts.

On July 11, 2019, CNN’s American presidential historian, Douglas Brinkley, was the guest speaker at a banquet held at Parkway Place in Maumee to conclude the ceremonies.

Ms. Wiley and her committee honor the participants from the battle with a Memorial Day observance at the statue by the Maumee River and interpretive walks at dusk through the actual battlefield.

She also is involved with historical accounts being studied in the Anthony Wayne schools and attends many history gatherings with members of the board and reenactors.

Ms. Wiley is a lawyer who represents medical providers who are faced with a professional negligence claim and aids attorneys who have legal malpractice claims against them.

She has worked with businesses and individuals in defending claims involving serious injury and wrongful death throughout northwest Ohio.

All lectures are free and open to the public. No refreshments will be served after the presentation.

For more information, contact the Guild President, Judy Justus at 419-874-6828. If there is inclement weather and the Maumee Schools are closed, the lecture will be canceled.
