July marks National Vehicle Theft Prevention month, and the Ohio Highway Patrol reminds motorists to protect their vehicle from theft through simple precautions.
“Americans spend hard-earned money on vehicles–vehicles that transport families to sporting events, workers to jobs, kids to school and so much more,” said Staff Lieutenant William Haymaker, Ohio Turnpike liaison.
Unfortunately, in 2019 alone, nearly 750,000 vehicles were stolen in the U.S., costing owners more than $6 billion.
Only 56.1 percent of all stolen motor vehicles were recovered, and of all motor vehicles stolen, 74.5 percent were passenger vehicles.
“A motor vehicle is stolen every 43.8 seconds,” he noted.
Motorists can exercise measures to keep their vehicles and belongings safe. Those include:
•Park in well-lit areas.
•Close and lock all windows and doors when you park.
•Put away valuables.
•Do not leave keys in the vehicle.
•Do not leave the area while the vehicle is running.
