Twp. voters asked to support fire levy

Springfield Township voters again will be asked to support a fire levy this fall.

At the July 19 meeting, the trustees agreed to place a 1.8-mill replacement property tax levy for the fire department on the ballot November 2.

The Lucas County auditor certified the amount the fiveyear replacement levy will generate at $1.13 million annually.

Because it is a replacement levy, the millage collected is based on current home values. It will cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $63 per year.

If approved, the levy collection will begin in 2022.

Fire Report

Fire Chief Barry Cousino presented the fire department’s June run report.

The department also responded to mutual/auto aid calls for Sylvania, five; Sylvania Township, eight, and Monclova Township and Swanton, one each.

The department conducted 16 inspections last month including state, eight; adoption/foster/home study, three; reinspections, two, and above ground storage tank, sprinkler systems and final/remodel, one each.

All three were ruled accidental and damages were Oakfield, $32,000; Banquot, $60,000, and Airport Highway, $200,000.

Other Business

In other fire department business, the trustees:

•Approved the hiring of six part-time firefighters. They are Trevor Ashbaugh, Jared Denman, Brandon Klingshirn, Alec Romstadt, Benjamin Scharf and Cameron Wood.

•Learned that Assistant Fire Chief Dave Moore and Lieutenant Marc Welsh conducted a fire extinguisher course at Clarios for 20 employees. The assistant chief also attended a tornado drill at Spring Meadows Extended Care.

“Assistant Chief Moore was in attendance for observation reasons and provided recommendations on the tornado plan,” Chief Cousino explained

•Heard from the chief that Safety Town at Crissey Elementary went well this year with 89 students attending.

“This year we accepted first graders due to the pandemic last year requiring us to cancel the program,” he said.

•Heard from the fire chief that crews responded to a cardiac arrest recently with a successful outcome. “The patient eventually fully recovered and walked out of the hospital. The patient and family came to the station to meet the responders who saved his life.” The next trustees meeting will be at 5 p.m., Monday, August 2, at the township meeting room, 7617 Angola Road, and is open to the public.
