OIG indicts area woman for improper activity at ODJFS

Angela Calderon was indicted September 30 in Lucas County Common Pleas Court on charges of telecommunications fraud, tampering with records and unauthorized use of computer/cable/telecommunications property.

In June, the Ohio Inspector General received a complaint from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) alleging that intermittent employee Ms. Calderon had improperly accessed and modified a relative's unemployment insurance claim in violation of ODJFS policies.

According to the inspector general’s office, Ms. Calderon had asked a supervisor to access her relative’s claim, but the supervisor refused, explaining that neither of them was permitted to access the claim pursuant to ODJFS policy.

Despite what her supervisor said, Ms. Calderon attempted to authorize the relative’s claim herself.

After it was disallowed, she attempted to reverse the decision. On the same date, Ms. Calderon submitted an email resigning from ODJFS.

During the course of a joint investigation with the Ohio Highway Patrol, investigators discovered that Ms. Calderon had been receiving unemployment benefits from ODJFS while working and being paid as an intermittent employee by ODJFS. Between December 3,

Between December 3, 2020, and March 13, 2021, when she resigned, Ms. Calderon filed weekly certifications of her reported unemployment and received in total $7,650 in unemployment benefits.

The investigative report includes two wrongdoings and one recommendation, and was referred to the Lucas County prosecutor’s office.
