Partnerships

When Blue Devil Radio took to the air just about five years ago, there were high hopes. First and foremost, we knew the opportunities the station would bring to our students would be significant. Unmatched, actually. There is only one other high school in our region that can offer such an opportunity to students, especially those with aspirations towards a career in the field of communications. Through the appeal of our music library and the convenience of streaming and app access, we gain fans and listeners every day.

We also have gained something else—chances to enhance and enrich relationships—even reciprocate a few through sponsorships that allow our partners another tool to communicate with the public. One such example is with St. Luke’s. Even after their sale to the McLaren Health System, the hospital’s leadership continued the now almost four-year agreement that invests dollars into the operation of the radio station (music library, technology) with literally no strings attached. However, during the last school year we also reached out to ask if they might be willing to help us provide a public service for our listeners—an interview format that each month provides several minutes of medical expertise on a variety of topics. To date, our listeners have gained information on stress management, fitness, virus mitigation, heart health—and the popularity of these segments continues to grow. Their doctors actually donate this valuable time and experience to Blue Devil Radio—all in addition to the financial commitment. I know that I’ve written about this relationship in the past, but I also believe in the importance of reminding our community from time to time—especially those who might have missed past references.

The relationship with McLaren St. Luke’s also has provided our board of education and members of our administrators with access to doctors and real data on many of the health issues impacting us, especially COVID-19 mitigation strategies, the management of stress and the importance of managing healthy lifestyles. McLaren St. Luke’s professionals see first-hand what is happening in our community. It’s important to have such a relationship that supports and values our efforts to provide the safest learning environment possible for both our students and the adults who teach and care for them beyond each school day.

I hope that everyone reading this column will continue (or start) listening to Blue Devil Radio (WNLB, 97.7fm) to hear more than the great music from the golden era of rock-n-roll—commercial free. You will hear our students as they present relevant information, artist profiles, station IDs, and help promote all that is good in the district. You’ll also learn about the partners who invest in our district and about the organizations that serve us. I’ll also let you in on a secret, last week Santa even came in for an interview (which will air right after Thanksgiving).

I think we’ve hit the big time.
