Ohio Turnpike customers no doubt drive by the 60th anniversary barn featuring President Rutherford B. Hayes and his quote, “The bold enterprises are the successful ones,” but do they know the story behind it?
Six years ago, the turnpike and the Ohio History Connection commemorated the anniversary with a historical barn painting.
The state’s first such Ohio history barn, visible from the turnpike near exit 91, features Ohio’s 19th president.
The Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont is the nation’s very first presidential library. It opened May 30, 1916. Plan a visit and schedule a few hours to take the barn artist’s first driving tour. The tour features eight of Scott Hagan’s barn paintings, including the Hayes barn.
