Ohio Turnpike crews are making final preparations for the upcoming winter season with comprehensive equipment inspections.
“Our snowplow drivers are ready to roll from our eight maintenance buildings across the Ohio Turnpike,” said Ferzan Ahmed, executive director.
Crews will deploy approximately 100 snowplows, including 16 brand new trucks from Western Star. They will be available at any given moment to maintain the turnpike’s 1,395 lane miles, 31 interchanges and 14 service plazas.
“When snow and ice events continue around the clock, crews will work 12-hour shifts to clear the roads,” he said, adding there are 15 rock salt storage facilities stockpiled with salt since late summer.
Crews use an average of 65,000 tons of rock salt each year and 293,000 gallons of liquid chemicals or brine.
