Holland Elementary SCHOOL NEWS

From the Desk of Principal Andy Evans The Madness of March

Whether you are a devoted college basketball fan, searching for the “luck of the Irish,” or are counting the days until spring break, there are a lot of exciting things happening in March at Holland Elementary School. From the third graders making their firstever field trip, to kindergarten students trying to trap leprechauns, students participating in our own “bracket challenge”–the March Madness Kindness Bracket with Heart Challenge Goals (that includes a chance to play dodge ball or put a pie in the face of a staff member)–this school is hopping.

We also are just one week away from beginning state testing for third through fifth grades. We know that everyone–teachers, students and families–are working very hard to ensure all are well prepared and ready to show what they know. Kids Heart Challenge

Kids Heart Challenge

Mrs. Brown kicked off the Kids Heart Challenge (AKA Jump Rope for Heart) this week in physical education class. She sent home the packets last week with a link to the flyer. Kids Heart Challenge Day will be Wednesday, March 30. Donation packets will be due by April 1. For kindergarten through third grade students, the added incentive is the pie in the face for raising at least $30. The fourth and fifth graders will be able to play dodgeball the last day before break for raising $30 or more.

Thank you for always supporting this wonderful cause. We raise money for the American Heart Association while also earning vouchers for PE equipment.

More March Madness Kindness Bracket

Mrs. Moden and our PBIS team have created a March Madness Kindness Bracket for students to vote on their favorite “kind” words. This week will begin with the “Sweet 16” and results will be displayed on a bulletin board outside of the fourth and fifth grade classrooms. Here are the first matchups: generous vs. gracious, helpful vs. polite, inspiring vs. courteous, empathetic vs. thoughtful, truthful vs. honest, loving vs. uplifting, caring vs. friendly and encouraging vs. compassionate.

The goal is to review the meaning of these words with students and provide examples.

This could make a great discussion at home too.
