As I “Guard” that Crosswalk”
In June, shortly after we celebrated the graduation of the Springfield High School Class of 2022, I shared a column in the Holland-Springfield Journal with a section titled, “Lessons from the Crosswalk.” In it, I mentioned that as an SHS graduating student in 1990, I didn’t have the opportunity to speak at my graduation. Now as the school’s principal, I have told the two classes that I have had the honor to present to the board of education for graduation that finding the right words to say challenges me–and while I suspect few may remember my comments, the importance of the opportunity is not lost on me. This year, I offered the newest group to call themselves Blue Devil alumni a few observations that they’ve actually taught me as I fulfilled my daily duties at the school’s crosswalk.
I talked to them about arriving with a purpose and finding their passion–that there is plenty of time to make the right turns (and to please avoid all those tempting left turns that they’ll encounter).
I talked about the importance of being in the moment every day. I watch our kids arrive for school every day–and that some arrive filled with challenge; some ready to be inspired. I asked the graduates to bet on themselves, to take chances and to believe there are people who will always be there for them, that graduation is not an ending but an important beginning, and that they are forever tied to both each other and to Springfield High School. I was, afterall, speaking from experience.
Well, folks, last week, my head was again filled with those thoughts as I donned my hat, reflective vest (with the special safety light gifted to me by my brother pinned to it) and greeted the almost 1,200 students who will learn and grow with us this year. I’ve always been honest, so I should tell you that the kids who crossed my path that first day weren’t smiling as widely as those whose fists I bumped at the Stranahan. However, with the later start of school time, I did see a lot of brighter eyes than in past years. And speaking of bright eyes, there is a lot to look forward to as we enjoy all that will unfold before our eyes during this 2022-23. I, for one, am glad to get started.
