Penta culinary students participate in tomato project for area families

Penta Career Center culinary arts students recently processed 2,500 pounds of tomatoes in a project to assist area families in need.

On Tuesday, September 13, and Wednesday, September 14, students peeled, seeded and froze the tomatoes to donate to the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo. The Islamic Center serves more than 300 people on the second Saturday of each month, as part of their community meal program.

Shared Legacy Farms in Elmore donated the tomatoes, and some Penta students also helped harvest them.

“This project is a very meaningful experience for the students,” said Janea Makowski, Penta culinary arts instructor. “The students are gaining skills and at the same time giving back to the community to help feed local families all year.”
