Penta ‘Cruise-In’ features classic cars, motorcycles

More than 350 vehicles on display

On a cool, overcast afternoon in late September, Penta Career Center hosted its 11th Cruise-In car show at the Perrysburg Township campus.

The overcast weather failed to deter car buffs eager to check out more than 350 classic and vintage vehicles on display including cars, trucks and motorcycles. Vehicle owners were admitted free with a donation of nonperishable food items for the career center’s food pantry.

In addition to cars, the cruise-in featured music, food and door prizes such as car care kits, gift certificates and products from several Penta programs.

Tours of the automotive technology and auto collision programs were offered. Students from Family, Career and Community Leaders of America coordinated a “Kids Garage” with activities for younger visitors.

The cruise-in was organized by the transportation programs and SkillsUSA, a leadership organization for career-technical education students.

Students raised more than $600 from the raffles and collected more than 2,000 nonperishable food and hygiene items for the Penta Pantry.

Awards were presented in several categories. They are Superintendent’s Choice–Gary and Lynn Mock, 1954 Chevy 3100 pickup; Best Motorcycle– Michael Guess of Holland, 2017 Honda Grom, and Alumni Award–Tom Snyder, 2013 Chevy Corvette customized to a 789.

Superintendent Ed Ewers noted the students did an excellent job organizing the event and commended them for collecting a trailer full of nonperishable food and hygiene products.

Above left, alumni Chad Lehmann, a 1991 graduate of the carpentry program, entered his 1929 Ford Model A series. Right, getting into the spirit of the show and dressing according to the styles of the early 20th century are Mike Parker, Gordon Rhoades and Bob Peinert. The trio drive 1914 and 1915 Ford Model T’s, with a mannequin partner.

Next year’s Cruise-in is planned for Wednesday, September 27.
