The Springfield Schools Foundation trustees hosted their second annual speed euchre tournament last month, raising nearly $15,000. Speed euchre is an innovative twist to the popular card game. Innovation and creativity are foundational to SSF, which exists to enrich the educational experiences for Springfield’s staff and students, said Megan Evans, foundation president. The tournament would not be possible without assistance from Cynthia Beekley, retired superintendent; Kari Bucher; Eliza Evans; Barrie Howell; Sherri Koback, alumni director; Marty Perlaky; Cindy Siedler; Kristina White, and Amanda Wilhelm.
“They made sure it was fun for more than 60 card players. They also made it fun for the guests who just enjoyed a silent auction and food,” Ms. Evans said. Holland’s Bunker’s Banquet Room featured foods from Grape Leaf, Mancino’s, Ralphies, Halftime Pizza, Lulu Fair, MacQueen’s Orchard and Cinco De Mayo. A separate dessert bar offered guests a “make-your-own” s’mores station, chocolate covered strawberries, an assortment of cookies, brownie sundaes, cupcakes and doughnuts.
A 50/50 raffle was won by Mary McKinsey who donated $100 from her winnings to families impacted by the fire at Hidden Cedars which had occurred earlier that day. During a tournament break, guests were updated on the status of the fire victims which included families of 10 Springfield students. The guests responded by filling the helmet of Assistant Fire Chief David Moore of the Springfield Township Fire Department. Donations quickly exceeded $1,400.
The evening concluded with the announcement of this year’s winners. They are alumna Marla Wietrzykowski, this year’s overall winner with 87 points. In close second was Jennifer Founght, and third place went to Tony Hartzell. A prize for the lowest point total was begrudgingly accepted by Mike Siedler.
