Construction has begun on the Springfield High School cafeteria and kitchen.
The improvements are being made using Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds and without any additional cost to residents, explained Treasurer Ryan Lockwood.
The current cafeteria is being enlarged to accommodate all students being able to eat in one location. “During COVID, to gain adequate spacing, we had students eating in hallways and in the field house lobby,” Mr. Lockwood noted.
A grab-and-go serving line will be added, bringing the number of lines to four. In addition, an entrance into existing restrooms from the cafeteria is being added so students no longer need venture into the hallway to utilize restrooms. “It’s a safety issue,” he said.
There will be some minor tweaking of the kitchen to accommodate changes to the cafeteria, mainly the serving line and dishwashing area.
Midwest Contracting, Inc. of Holland, is working on the $2 million project and plans to have it completed by August 15.
