Welch family pickleball courts dedicated at Rotary Park

Pickleball enthusiasts in Perrysburg now have a second location in town in which to enjoy the popular sport.

On a beautiful, unseasonably warm and sunny April 14, the Perrysburg Rotary Club dedicated eight new courts at Rotary Community Park, 26350 Fort Meigs Road, in the names of two former publishers and a current publisher of the Perrysburg Messenger, Rossford Record, Holland-Springfield and Point and Shoreland journals.

The Welch Family Pickleball Complex, located across the parking lot from the inclusive playground, features eight courts and shaded viewing from which to watch the action.

Rotarian Jack Sculfort opened the dedication, “It is an absolute pleasure to welcome everyone.”

He recalled meeting Bob Welch years ago, noting that although the two didn’t always agree on everything, they shared a common goal, the ideals of Rotary and service above self.

He later met Mr. Welch’s son John, also a Rotarian. “My great friend John led us [Rotary] for many years through turmoil, transition and his own personal health.”

He added it is a privilege to dedicate the courts in their honor and that of the third generation to serve the Perrysburg Rotary, John’s son Chet.

Chet Welch, speaking on behalf of his grandfather and father, thanked the community and Rotarians for the honor, adding, “The city, Rotary foundation and club were instrumental in making this dream a reality.”

Glancing around the park and at the inclusive playground and tennis courts, he added, “Together you have made the quality of life so much better for residents.”

Mr. Welch said he is certain his father and grandfather are “smiling down on this. Both lived the motto ‘service above self.’” Perrysburg Mayor Tom Mackin thanked the Welch family “for all they do for the community.”

He appreciates the Rotary’s work on behalf of the city. “This project has gone seamlessly,” and he recognized city crews for their hard work and planning to get to the dedication day.

“We are excited for this to be open,” he said.

Mr. Welch along with his sister Destiny Welch-Pisula and their mother Sally Welch, unveiled the plaque, which read in part, “Three generations of the Welch men have successfully and ably led the Rotary Club of Perrysburg. Their unwavering support of the ideals of Rotary helped create these courts for all to enjoy.”

Following the unveiling, Mr. Welch and Ms. Pisula took the ceremonial first volley on the courts, which soon after were filled with pickleball players.
